When you think about it, it’s pretty amazing that NASA’s Cassini spacecraft, launched 18 years ago, traveled nearly a billion miles to reach Saturn, which it has been orbiting for the past 11 years. It takes anywhere from 68 to 84 minutes for a radio signal to travel one-way between Earth and Cassini, yet even with such an obstacle it is expected to function until September 15, 2017, when it will be instructed to crash into Saturn’s atmosphere and destroy itself. But until then, we can expect some amazing, never-before-seen closeup images of the second-largest planet and its 62 (!) moons. Check out these latest Cassini photos featuring Saturn’s icy moon Enceladus along with an animation of the fly-by from NASA.
